Liver Cancer Treatment

Liver Cancer Treatment-smiling ladyTreatments for liver cancer depend on the type of cancer and the stage. Early-stage primary liver cancer, and some metastatic tumors, may be treated with surgery, with the goal of removing the entire tumor. Other methods such as chemotherapy treatment and conventional radiation therapy may also be used. In some cases, the entire liver can be removed and replaced with a donor liver transplant. With more advanced cases of liver cancer, chemotherapy combined with some of the above mentioned treatments may be used. Precision CyberKnife offers patients a non-surgical treatment option with the ability to deliver very high doses of radiation to both primary and metastatic liver tumors with extreme accuracy.

A major challenge to treating liver tumors with traditional radiation therapy is that the tumor moves as the patient breathes. This leaves the liver vulnerable to damage as the tumor may not get enough radiation and surrounding healthy tissue can be harmed. In addition, some liver tumors cannot be removed surgically because they are located near critical blood vessels. Precision CyberKnife is a safe, noninvasive alternative for treating these tumors.

Precision CyberKnife, through a highly accurate system that detects and tracks tumor movement, delivers radiation with pinpoint accuracy while allowing patients to breathe normally during treatments. The high dose radiation targets the tumor while sparing healthy tissue and minimizes the potential for negative side effects, such as reduced liver function. Liver cancer treatment with Precision CyberKnife is usually completed in as few as five sessions and patients can resume their normal activities shortly after treatment.  Please call us to schedule a consultation at (631) 675-5399.
