Bone & Spine Tumor Treatment

Bone and Spine Tumor Treatment-happy woman near a treeTreatment of spine and bone tumors requires a combination of treatments, such as surgery, radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy.  Bones are a common site for metastases which can form small holes in the affected bone, weakening it and increasing the risk of fractures and other issues. Precision CyberKnife offers patients a non-invasive alternative to surgery, for treating spinal tumors and bone metastases that are considered inoperable because of their location.

While healthy tissue can be damaged with conventional radiation therapy for bone metastases, radiosurgery with Precision CyberKnife spares normal tissue, which is particularly important when treating spinal metastases close to a critical structure, such as the spinal cord. The CyberKnife’s sophisticated software can pinpoint the tumor’s exact location in real time using X-ray images taken during treatment. This allows precise delivery of radiation to the tumor while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue.

CyberKnife robotic radiation treatment for spinal and bone tumors may require patients to be fitted for a custom body cradle, which is designed to ensure comfort during treatment and ensure the same position for both imaging and treatment. Depending on the location of the tumor, patients may also be custom-fitted with a mesh face mask. Both the cradle and face mask are painless and completely non-invasive.

Precision CyberKnife treatment for spine and bone tumors can be easily divided into multiple sessions, therefore lowering the risk of side effects and damage to surrounding healthy tissue. Typically, treatments are completed within five days.  Call (631) 675-5399 for a consultation.
