Kidney Tumor Treatment
Precision CyberKnife offers patients a non-surgical option for kidney tumor treatment. Traditionally, surgical removal of part or all of a kidney is the standard treatment for kidney tumors. Techniques that destroy tissue with freezing (cryosurgery) or heat (radio-frequency ablation) have also been used to treat kidney tumors. Treating kidney tumors with standard radiation can be challenging because the kidney moves when the patient breathes, making it difficult to accurately target the tumor with standard radiation. As a result, the tumor may not receive enough radiation and nearby healthy tissue may be damaged.
With Precision CyberKnife, these challenges are minimized. Patients can breathe normally during treatment and the risks and complications associated with traditional surgical treatment options are reduced. The CyberKnife’s robotically controlled radiation system tracks the tumor during breathing and adjusts for movement. The high dose radiation then targets the tumor while sparing healthy kidney tissue. Kidney cancer treatment with Precision CyberKnife is usually completed in as few as five sessions and patients can resume their normal activities the same day.
