Zucker School of Medicine/Northwell Health at Mather Hospital Psychiatry Residency Program, provides the full spectrum of educational opportunities one would anticipate in a gold standard residency program.  Providing care within an award winning community hospital, our residents will be taught by experienced faculty members. The residency is designed to provide a strong clinical foundation in a community-focused environment.

Our residents will have the unique opportunity of helping to shape the mood and culture of our residency program.  Our resident’s voices and feedback are welcomed as we continue to develop quality educational initiatives and grow our program.

Mather Hospital offers an exceptional interdisciplinary opportunity for residents to train in a community hospital setting with comprehensive Behavioral Health Services. Our psychiatry program is dedicated to serving the patients’ needs while preparing you for practice with diverse psychopathology with patient centered emphasis.   Faculty and Staff’s enthusiasm to help you grow and develop is evident by their commitment to resident education. Resident participation in program improvement is strongly supported and residents will also have the opportunity to join department and hospital committees. Unique to Mather is the familial setting amongst the other residency programs. Opportunities to socialize with other programs are made available in the form of lectures and other functions supporting the community feeling that is Mather Hospital.

At the heart of this program’s educational process is the understanding that the provision of healthcare to a fellow human being is a privilege. We at Mather Hospital will hold the door for someone who is passing by or may, if encountering a person who can’t find their way, walk them to their destination.  Each individual is unique and carries a value system with which they frame their world. When we treat a person we must take a step into their world, to see things as they see them. In this way we can truly collaborate with the patient to help them incorporate long lasting changes into their life and achieve results that they can recognize as meaningful.  We are looking for applicants that are friendly, passionate, professional, team players, with a good work ethic.

Residents are required to complete a scholarly project during their training. This scholarly project may be original research, participation in a clinical trial, a quality improvement project, a scholarly case report, or an educational curriculum.  In many cases the resident collaborates with other residents or with other members of professional healthcare staff. Under the guidance of the Director of Research, the resident defines a suitable activity and identifies a mentor. Upon completion residents will present their findings to the medical staff during the Program’s resident research fair held every spring. Winners from the fair will present their scholarly activity during a Grand Rounds presentation. Their work is added to their portfolios so it can be assessed as part of their semi-annual review.

Research methodology is part of the psychiatry residency didactic curriculum.  These lectures include topics such as data cleaning and descriptive analysis, strategies for successful critical appraisal of research literature, and evaluating value through cost effectiveness analysis. Residents have participated in local and national conferences; and are afforded ample opportunity to do so.
