The overall goal of the Residency Program in Psychiatry at Mather Hospital is to train compassionate, knowledgeable and clinically proficient psychiatrists. Through dedicated didactic time and participation in a full range of clinical, administrative and patient-centered activity, the graduating resident will be able to practice psychiatry safely, efficiently and humanely.
The curriculum of the program relies on varied clinical rotations, dedicated didactic seminars and comprehensive individual supervision. Trainees learn about psychopathology and phenomenology with a focus on current psychiatric diagnosis, biological basis for disease, relevant symptomatology and treatments grounded in the latest evidence-based research. The didactic curriculum is composed of a challenging lecture series, clinical case conferences, team rounds, grand rounds, case simulations and journal clubs, improvement and medical education as well as individual and group therapy supervision.
The graduating resident will have developed the requisite expertise in neuroscience in its relation to psychiatric illness, pathophysiology of psychiatric and neuropsychiatric conditions, and evidence-based approaches that are at the foundation of modern mental health treatment. The program develops residents that can meet the challenges of modern medical practice and are able to critically evaluate scientific literature.
