Wellness Is a Priority, Not an Afterthought

At Mather Hospital, we believe that exceptional physicians are developed in environments that care for the whole person — not just the clinician. Our program is intentionally designed to promote work-life balance, protect resident well-being, and foster genuine connection among trainees, faculty, and staff.

Wellness Events & Social Programming

Taking time to connect outside the hospital is central to the culture of GME at Mather. Throughout the year, the program hosts a variety of events including:

  • PGY-1 Welcome Party — an early-year gathering to welcome the incoming class and help new interns feel at home from day one
  • Friendsgiving — a highlight of the year in which residents, faculty, staff, and their families come together to share good food and conversation
  • Transitional Year Retreat — off-site bonding experiences such as TopGolf outings and visits to a local Long Island winery
  • Resident & Fellow Appreciation Day — a dedicated celebration recognizing the contributions of all trainees
  • Hospital-Wide Events — including outdoor BBQs, community activities, and team-building events open to the entire Mather family
  • Graduation Ceremony & Celebration — the culmination of the training year, honoring graduating residents with a formal ceremony and celebration shared with faculty, staff, family, and friends. This milestone event recognizes the hard work, growth, and achievements of each graduate as they transition to the next chapter of their medical careers

Structured Wellness Benefits

Beyond social events, the program provides built-in protections for resident well-being:

Life Maintenance Days

Every resident receives one Life Maintenance Day per quarter — a protected day to attend to personal appointments, errands, and responsibilities that are difficult to manage during the demands of training. Because life doesn’t pause during residency, and we don’t expect you to put it on hold.

Cultural Heritage Day

Each resident receives one Cultural Heritage Day per year — a day to observe and celebrate cultural, religious, or personal traditions that are meaningful to them. We recognize that honoring your identity and heritage is essential to your well-being.
