Our licensed Speech-Language Pathologists provide services for a multitude of diagnoses and conditions, including multiple sclerosis, swallowing disorders, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, autoimmune disorders, spinal cord injury, pulmonary disease and genetic syndromes.  Diagnostic evaluations and therapeutic interventions are available for children and adults.

Therapy is individualized and designed to improve a patient’s understanding of spoken language, ability to convey verbal messages and produce speech clearly due to weakness or lack of coordination.

Our therapists are trained and certified in Clinical Swallow Evaluation and Modified Barium Swallow Studies. In addition to traditional swallowing therapy, neuromuscular stimulation is provided by our highly skilled certified VitalStim clinicians.  VitalStim Therapy promotes swallowing through neuromuscular electric stimulation.  In conjunction with traditional exercises, it is designed to strengthen and reeducate muscles to improve the swallowing mechanism.

Mather Hospital is offering a two-part speech therapy program to help individuals with Parkinson’s regain and maintain effective communication.

Part I: SPEAK OUT!® places emphasis on speaking with intent and converting speech from an automatic function to an intentional act.

Part II: Patients transition to The LOUD Crowd®, a weekly free maintenance program led by a speech-language pathologist. Participation in The LOUD Crowd®, along with daily home practice and six-month re-evaluations, has been shown to help patients maintain their communication skills.

For more information about SPEAK OUT!® and The LOUD Crowd® or to schedule a speech evaluation, please call (631) 473-1320, ext. 5447.
