What is Women’s Behavioral Health?

Women’s behavioral health is a specialized field dedicated to understanding and addressing the unique mental health needs of women across their entire lifespan. It recognizes that women’s experiences with mental well-being and illness are profoundly shaped by distinct biological, social, and life-stage factors.

Our approach takes into account:

  • Biological Influences:
    • Pregnancy & Postpartum
    • Perimenopause & Menopause
    • Menstruation (and associated hormonal shifts)
  • Unique Life Stressors:
    • Caregiver Burden
    • Experiences of Trauma & Violence
    • Reproductive Difficulties (e.g., infertility, loss)
    • Societal Expectations & Pressures

Why focus on Women’s Behavioral Health?

It’s simple: women’s mental health needs are unique and demand specialized attention.

  • Common Challenge: 1 in 5 women experience a mental health condition each year.
  • Higher Risk: Women face elevated risks for depression, anxiety, PTSD, and eating disorders.
  • Unique Influences: Their mental well-being is distinctly shaped by:
    • Hormonal fluctuations throughout the reproductive cycle.
    • Different risk factors and onset patterns.
    • The complex interplay of biology and life stressors.

This specialized understanding is vital for effective support and lasting well-being.

Specialized Care Through Key Life Transitions: Perimenopause & Perinatal Health

At Mather, we offer targeted behavioral health support for two distinct yet profoundly impactful phases in a woman’s reproductive journey: Perimenopause and the Perinatal period. Both bring significant hormonal and life changes that can deeply affect mental well-being, and both require specialized understanding and care.

Menopause is officially defined as 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period, typically occurring around age 51-52 in the U.S.

Perimenopause is the transitional phase leading up to menopause. This period can begin up to 10 years before menopause and is often associated with challenging symptoms such as:

  • Hot flashes
  • Mood changes and irritability
  • Increased anxiety
  • Night sweats

Crucially, perimenopause can be linked to the new onset of mood and anxiety disorders or the worsening of existing conditions. Our approach to managing the mental and emotional components includes:

  • Medication Management
  • Psychotherapy

Please note: While we focus on the behavioral health aspects, we do not provide Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). However, we work closely and collaboratively with Northwell Gyn when HRT is indicated for your overall well-being.
