The transition from medical school to residency can be challenging. To ease that transition, our program pairs every incoming resident with a faculty mentor who serves as a guide, resource, and trusted advisor throughout the training year. Faculty mentors help new residents acclimate to the hospital and the community, offering guidance on clinical development, career planning, and maintaining personal well-being.

Studies consistently show that mentorship is a powerful protective factor against burnout, and our program takes this relationship seriously. Faculty mentors are available when needed — whether the conversation is about a challenging case, a career question, or navigating the demands of residency life.

In addition, a dedicated Clinical Research Coordinator is available to guide residents in their scholarly endeavors — from project conception through abstract submission and publication.

A Community That Feels Like Family

At Mather, residents know that faculty and staff are always available — not just as teachers and supervisors, but as colleagues who genuinely care. Whether it’s a spontaneous conversation in the hallway, a shared meal at Friendsgiving, or a quiet check-in after a tough shift, the culture at Mather is one of mutual support, warmth, and belonging.

“It is impossible to walk through the halls of Mather Hospital without feeling the warmth from those you pass by — and that is what makes training here a truly unique experience.”
