PORT JEFFERSON, NY ― Mather Hospital together with Arif Ahmad, MD, has again been accredited as a Center of Excellence in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and a Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery by the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC). Dr. Ahmad also is recognized by the SRC as a master surgeon in both bariatric and robotic surgery.

The accreditation follows an intense two-day survey by the SRC, an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the safety, efficacy and efficiency of surgical care worldwide. The bariatric surgery program has been accredited by the SRC every three years since 2007, and the robotic surgery program since 2016.

“We have successfully met or surpassed the standards needed to continuously maintain both prestigious accreditations,” said Mather Hospital President Kenneth Roberts. “The success of both programs is a tribute to the interdisciplinary efforts made across the hospital that guide our patients through the continuum of care.”

Mather also was recently designated an Epicenter in Robotic Bariatric Surgery by Intuitive, manufacturers of the DaVinci® surgical robotic system. An Epicenter serves as a model for robotic surgery and is considered a state-of-the-art facility with a surgeon who is a proven expert in his or her field as demonstrated by world class standards in clinical outcomes, safety, procedural efficiency, cost reduction and program management. Dr. Ahmad and Mather are the first such Epicenter on Long Island one of only three in New York State.

As part of the designation, Dr. Ahmad and Mather’s surgical team host surgeons from around the country and internationally who come to the Port Jefferson hospital to learn the latest bariatric robotic surgical techniques in one of Mather’s two DaVinci® robot operating rooms.
