PORT JEFFERSON, NY – Mather Hospital earned its 13th top “A” rating from The Leapfrog Group for its efforts in protecting patients from harm and meeting the highest safety standards in the U.S. No other hospital in New York State has earned more top ratings from Leapfrog.

Mather is one of only three Long Island hospitals and one of only 11 in New York State to earn the top grade for the spring 2019 rating period. The Leapfrog Group is an independent, national not-for-profit organization founded more than a decade ago by the nation’s leading employers and private health care experts that strives to make giant “leaps” forward in the safety, quality and affordability of health care in the U.S. by promoting transparency through our data collection and public reporting initiatives.

“This recognition by The Leapfrog Group is further acknowledgement of Mather’s commitment to patient safety and nursing excellence,” said Mather President Kenneth Roberts. “We strive to be a high reliability organization where everybody is encouraged to speak up about potential safety issues.”

Developed under the guidance of a national expert panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,600 U.S. hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public. Founded in 2000 by large employers and other purchasers, The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit organization driving a movement for giant leaps forward in the quality and safety of American health care.
