The Robotic Surgery Program at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital will bring the advanced da Vinci surgical system to Smith Haven Mall Feb. 7-8 to allow shoppers to experience the features of the sophisticated robotic platform.

The da Vinci system will be displayed as part of Mather’s Health & Wellness Fair in the mall’s Center Court on Saturday, Feb. 7 from 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday, Feb. 8 from 11 am to 4 pm. Local high school robotics teams will test their skill at operating the da Vinci robot in a friendly competition on Feb. 7 from 1-3 pm.

The Health & Wellness Fair will feature demonstrations and free screenings by Mather’s signature programs and services, including the Bariatric Center of Excellence, Total Joint Replacement Program, Sleep Disorders Center, Outpatient Imaging Services and Outpatient Rehabilitation Services. Mather’s Nursing Department will offer free blood pressure screenings on both days.

The da Vinci system is used at Mather to perform bariatric, gynecological and urological surgeries. The da Vinci makes use of small incisions to introduce miniaturized wristed instruments and a high-definition 3D camera. Seated at the da Vinci console, the surgeon views a magnified, high-resolution 3D image of the surgical site.  At the same time, state-of-the-art robotic and computer technologies translate the surgeon’s hand movements into precise micro-movements of the da Vinci instruments.
