Christopher Lumia, RN, a nurse in Mather Hospital’s Emergency Department, received a DAISY Award® for Extraordinary Nurses for his patient care.
He was nominated by the wife of a patient who wrote, “Due to my husband’s cancer diagnosis, we have been to numerous urgent cares and ERs over the past three years. While all the nurses were professional and caring, none of them inspired us to write a letter for nurse recognition… (Chris) checked in every single time he passed to make sure my husband was comfortable and had ice chips.
“Chris provided updates on whatever scan or test was performed or scheduled, and ensured there was an extra chair for me and my daughter…Chris was kind, caring, engaging, knowledgeable and made us feel safe and supported…”
The DAISY (Diseases Attacking the Immune System) Award® was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died of complications from an autoimmune disease at the age of 33. During Pat’s hospitalization, his family was awestruck by the care and compassion his nurses provided for him and everyone in his family. The DAISY Award® is a special honor given to extraordinary nurses for the compassionate contributions they make every day, going above and beyond expectations in science and sensitivity.
