PORT JEFFERSON, NY ― Melissa Nicosia, MD, a board-certified gynecologic surgeon, has been appointed Director of Mather Hospital’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr. Nicosia has extensive clinical expertise in vaginal, laparoscopic, robotic, and hysteroscopic surgery as well as medical treatment options in various benign gynecologic conditions, including fibroids, abnormal bleeding, endometriosis, pelvic pain, endometriosis, and pelvic organ prolapse. Prior to joining Mather, Dr. Nicosia was the Director of Gynecology at Woodhull Hospital in Brooklyn, NY, and an assistant clinical professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at NYU. During this time, she improved access to minimally invasive surgical options for women and received the Excellence in Innovation Award. She has published in peer-reviewed journals and presented nationally and internationally on an array of women’s health topics.

Dr. Nicosia received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biosystems Engineering from Clemson University in Clemson, SC and a medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC.  She completed her internship and residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City where she was administrative chief resident. During her residency training, she participated in an international rotation in Monrovia, Liberia through the Health Education and Relief Through Teaching Foundation with a primary focus on the education of local residents in improving surgical skills and knowledge of obstetrics and gynecology.

She completed a fellowship in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, WA. She is a member of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists.
