Northwell’s Mather Hospital was among 15 Northwell Health hospitals to have received an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group for fall 2025, recognizing their commitment to protecting patients from preventable harm and delivering the highest standards of safety and quality care. Mather has earned the most consecutive A grades of any hospital in Suffolk County.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, the nation’s only rating program solely focused on hospital safety, assigns letter grades A through F to more than 3,000 acute-care hospitals across the country twice a year. Grades are based on the hospitals’ performance in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents and infections.

“Patient safety is a top priority at Mather Hospital,” said Mather President Kevin McGeachy. “Our goal is to be a high reliability organization where everybody is encouraged to speak up about potential safety issues.”

The other Northwell hospitals received an “A” rating are Danbury Hospital (CT); Glen Cove Hospital; Huntington Hospital; Lenox Hill Hospital; Long Island Jewish Forest Hills; Long Island Jewish Valley Stream; Northern Dutchess Hospital; Northern Westchester Hospital; Peconic Bay Medical Center; Phelps Hospital; Plainview Hospital; Putnam Hospital; Sharon Hospital (CT); and South Shore University Hospital.

“Earning an “A” grade means Northwell Health made a true commitment to put patient safety first,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “We congratulate the leadership, Board, clinicians, staff and volunteers that all had a role to play in this achievement.”

The Leapfrog Group’s biannual grades are widely regarded as a trusted benchmark for consumers and healthcare professionals. An “A” grade indicates excellence in hospital safety across multiple measures, including staffing levels, infection prevention, hand hygiene compliance and responsiveness to critical events.
