One of 11 Northwell hospitals to receive the top A rating from the Leapfrog Group
PORT JEFFERSON, NY – Mather Hospital is one of eleven Northwell hospitals to receive the top patient safety rating from the nonprofit The Leapfrog Group, which evaluates health systems throughout the United States based on safety, quality and transparency using a report card. This is Mather’s 22nd A rating from Leapfrog, the most of any Suffolk Country hospital.
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades examines more than 3,000 acute-care hospitals twice per year. Northwell’s other A-rated hospitals are: Glen Cove Hospital, Huntington Hospital, Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan, Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, LIJ Forest Hills, Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco, Phelps Hospital in Sleepy Hollow, Plainview Hospital, South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore and Syosset Hospital. Northwell also had 11 A-graded hospitals in Leapfrog’s November 2024 report card.
“Patient quality and safety is our top priority at Northwell,” said Jill Kalman, MD, senior vice president, chief medical officer and deputy physician-in-chief at Northwell. “As we mark Patient Experience Week, we celebrate the dedication of our team members who ensure that every patient receives compassionate, expert care. These A-rated Northwell hospitals are a reflection of the outstanding work happening across our system every day.
“This top rating for patient safety from The Leapfrog Group is a direct reflection of our entire Mather team’s unwavering commitment to excellence,” said Joseph Ng, MD, MBA, Medical Director at Mather Hospital. “We’ve built a culture where every voice matters, both clinical and nonclinical. That shared commitment is what drives our success and ensures the highest standards of care for our patients.”
Leapfrog examines the clinical processes, structural measures and patient outcomes of hospitals across 22 categories. Outcomes, such as infection prevention, account for half of the overall score. New York State ranks 31st for the percentage of grade A hospitals, below the national average at 25 percent. By comparison, 73 percent of Northwell hospitals earned As.
In addition, Leapfrog designates “Straight A” hospitals, which have earned an A in at least five consecutive cycles of the Hospital Safety Grades and encompass just 12 percent of all hospitals. Mather Hospital, Northern Westchester Hospital and South Shore University Hospital were each recognized.
The biannual safety grade is an A, B, C, D or F assigned to all hospitals based on their ability to protect patients from medical errors, accidents, injuries and infections.
“All hospitals should be proud to earn an A, but they should not rest on that laurel,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO, Leapfrog Group. “Patient safety is a relentless, never-ending quest to put patients first.”
