David L. Spector, PhD, Director of Research at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, will discuss his research on “Searching for New Ways to Stop the Progression of Breast Cancer” at a free program at Mather on Thursday, Oct. 29 at 6:30 pm. The program, part of Mather’s Paint Port Pink breast cancer awareness outreach, will take place in the Long Island Anesthesia Physicians Conference Center.

Metastasis is a leading cause of breast cancer-associated mortality. Research in Spector’s laboratory is focused on identifying and characterizing a new class of therapeutic targets that can be manipulated to halt breast cancer progression and metastasis.

Spector has been a member of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory faculty since 1985. He is head of the Gene Regulation and Cell Proliferation Program of the National Cancer Institute-designated Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Cancer Center. Spector has published more than 175 papers and is a member of the editorial boards of numerous scientific journals. In 2014 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts & Science and is a foreign Associate Member of the European Molecular Biology Organization.

Paint Port Pink is Mather’s month-long breast cancer awareness outreach and is presented by Astoria Bank is presented by Astoria Bank with the support of LI Anesthesia Physicians, Long Island Physician Associates, North Shore Hematology Oncology Associates, People’s United Bank and Suffolk Plastic Surgeons.

The outreach is distributing breast cancer information, raising funds for the Fortunato Breast Health Center and increasing breast health awareness throughout our community with the cooperation of the sponsors and the Village of Port Jefferson, the Port Jefferson School District, the North Shore Art Guild, Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce and more than 80 local businesses. All money raised will benefit the Fortunato Breast Health Center Fund for Uninsured.
