PORT JEFFERSON, NY ― Luis Gruberg, MD, has been named medical director of Mather Hospital’s new cardiac catheterization lab, which is scheduled for a spring 2021 opening.

Mather was one of three Northwell Health facilities to receive approval earlier this year from the New York State Health and Health Planning Council to establish cardiac catheterization labs. Mather’s 3,644-square-foot addition will include two units – one for coronary diagnostic and intervention procedures, which will open first, and a second lab that can also do electrophysiology studies and procedures, including ablative therapies, device implants, cardioversions and diagnostic studies.

Currently Northwell’s director of cardiovascular research for eastern Long Island based at South Shore University Hospital, Dr. Gruberg is board certified in interventional cardiology, cardiology and internal medicine. His current practice is with Northwell Health Physician Partners Cardiology in Smithtown and Bay Shore. He also is a professor of medicine (cardiology) at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.

Prior to Joining Northwell in 2017, Dr. Gruberg was director of cardiac catheterization laboratories for Stony Brook University Hospital, He had earlier been director of the Chest Pain Unit and director for research in interventional cardiology.

Born in Bolivia, he received his medical degree at the University of San Simon Medical School in Cochabamba. At 25, he emigrated to Israel where he worked for 20 years, completing a fellowship in internal medicine and cardiovascular diseases, working at hospitals and teaching at the Sackler School of Medicine of Tel Aviv University. During this time period he took time off to do research as a Fogarty Fellow at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD as part of the Human Genome Project. He later completed a fellowship in interventional cardiology at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC where he later became the director of clinical pharmacological trials.
