Just 11% of New York hospitals earn an ‘A’ in Leapfrog’s newest safety ratings

PORT JEFFERSON, NY – Mather Hospital received another top “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group for its achievements in protecting hospital patients from preventable harm and errors.

“Once again our commitment to patient safety and nursing excellence have earned Mather Hospital national recognition,” said Executive Director Kevin McGeachy. “Every Mather team member contributed to this prestigious recognition. Together, we ensure a culture of safety.”

Mather was one of six Northwell Health hospitals to earn an “A” grade for patient safety in the latest Leapfrog ratings, according to a report released today by the Leapfrog Group. The others are Long Island Jewish; Forest Hills, Manhasset; Northern Westchester Hospital, Mt. Kisco; Peconic Bay Medical Center, Riverhead; South Shore University Hospital, Bay Shore; and Syosset Hospital.

The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit organization, assigns an A, B, C, D or F grade to nearly 3,000 acute-care hospitals nationwide, based on 30 evidence-based patient safety performance measures. The organization issues the report twice annually.

“Earning an ‘A’ Grade means Mather Hospital made a true commitment to put patients first,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “We congratulate the leadership, Board, clinicians, staff and volunteers that all had a role to play in this achievement.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program exclusively based on hospital prevention of medical errors, infections and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day nationally. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually in the fall and spring.
