Experts in Healing Summary: Mather is one of only six Long Island hospitals to receive top score from The Leapfrog Group

Mather Hospital has received The Leapfrog Group’s top "A" Hospital Safety Score for the fifth consecutive ratings period. Mather is one of only 251 hospitals in the nation to have achieved an "A" grade in all five score releases of the Hospital Safety Score.

The Leapfrog Group is an independent national nonprofit focused on initiative breakthrough improvements in the safety, quality and affordability of health care for Americans. Leapfrog assigns scores of A, B, C, D or F to U.S. hospitals based on preventable medical errors, injuries, accidents and infections.

Mather is one of only six Long Island hospitals to receive the top score in Leapfrog’s latest ranking of 137 New York State hospitals. Statewide, only 27 hospitals received the top score. Mather also received an "A" rating in each of the two annual rankings in both 2012 and 2013.

"I congratulate the Mather Family on this latest recognition of our continuing dedication to patient safety," said Mather President Kenneth Roberts. "Quality and safety – along with people, service, innovation and growth – are core pillars of the culture at Mather Hospital. These pillars underscore all we do."

Calculated under the guidance of Leapfrog’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single "A," "B," "C," "D," or "F" score representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from preventable harm. More than 2,500 U.S. general hospitals were assigned scores in spring 2014, with about 32 percent receiving an "A" grade. The Hospital Safety Score is fully transparent, and its website offers a full analysis of the data and methodology used in determining grades.
