John T. Mather Memorial Hospital was one of four Long Island hospitals to be given an “A” rating for patient safety by the Leapfrog Group, an independent, national not-for-profit organization that advocates for safety, quality and affordability of healthcare.

In June 2012, the Leapfrog Group’s first Hospital Safety Scorecard ranked 130 hospitals across New York and assigned each a Hospital Safety Score of A, B, C, D, or F, reflecting how safe each hospital is for patients. Only 20 hospitals in New York State earned the “A” rating.

The analysis was done by a nine-member panel of patient safety experts who selected 26 measures of publicly available hospital safety data, analyzed the data and determined the weight of each based on evidence, opportunity for improvement and impact. The rankings are available at: http://hospitalsafetyscore.org .

“With the rating from The Leapfrog Group, Mather Hospital has once again been recognized for its excellent patient safety by an independent organization, and that is a credit to every Mather employee,” said Mather Hospital President Kenneth Roberts. “Mather promotes a culture of safety for our patients and strives to foster transparency and communication.”

This is the latest recognition of Mather Hospital by organizations concerned with patient safety and quality care:

  • Mather was one of only eight hospitals in New York State to be cited by The Joint Commission last year as a “Top Performer” in 2010 for sustained excellence in key quality measures. The four measures for which Mather achieved a performance threshold of 95 percent or above are heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical. Nationwide, only 405 hospitals were recognized out of almost 3,100 submitting accountability measure data to The Joint Commission.
  • Mather Hospital was ranked among the region’s best hospitals in 2011 by U.S. News & World Report. The hospitals were ranked according to criteria that included outcomes, reputation and quality in a wide range of specialties. Mather Hospital was one of 10 Long Island hospitals to make the list the New York region and was cited for high performance in gastroenterology, geriatrics, and neurology and neurosurgery.
  • Mather also was recognized in two consecutive years as a top hospital on the Honor Roll of the Niagara Health Quality Coalition (NHQC), a group of employers, hospitals, insurers, and physicians in Western New York who work together to improve the quality and value of healthcare.
