Northwell’s Mather Hospital has earned two recognitions and contributed to a third from the American Heart Association (AHA) for treatment of patients suffering heart attacks:

– The Get With The Guidelines® – Coronary Artery Disease NSTEMI Gold award in recognition for its commitment to offering rapid, research-based care to people experiencing a specific type of heart attack known as a non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI).

– The Get With The Guidelines® – Coronary Artery Disease STEMI Receiving Center Gold award in recognition for its commitment to offering rapid, research-based care to people experiencing a specific type of heart attack known as an ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), known to be more severe and dangerous than other types of heart attacks.

– The 2025 Mission: Lifeline® Systems of Care Regional Award – acknowledges adherence to the Get With The Guidelines®-Coronary Artery Disease quality performance standards. Mather’s record of success in treating STEMIs contributed to the region’s award.

“Mather Hospital is dedicated to improving the quality of heart attack care and the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines program helps us achieve that goal,” said President Kevin McGeachy. “The program puts proven knowledge and guidelines to work on a daily basis so patients have the best possible chance of survival.”

Mather Hospital opened its Cardiac Catheterization Lab in 2021 and an Electrophysiology Lab the following year. “To receive gold awards after just four years is a testament to our dedication to quality,” Mr. McGeachy said.

Averaging 42 STEMI cases per year, Mather’s Cath Lab has met or exceeded 100% of AHA guidelines for timeliness of treating heart attack patients for door to balloon (catheterization), door to EKG, and prescription of discharge medications.

Each year, more than 1 million cases of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) require hospitalization in the U.S., and about 70% of ACS cases are classified as NSTEMI, caused by a complete blockage in a coronary artery.

“In the event of an NSTEMI heart attack, adherence to the American Heart Association’s guidelines is critical. These guidelines include specific recommendations for in-hospital care and cardiac rehabilitation post-discharge,” said Abhinav Goyal, M.D., MHS, FACC, FAHA, volunteer chair of the American Heart Association Coronary Artery Disease System of Care Advisory Group.

The NSTEMI award is earned by hospitals that demonstrate a commitment to treating patients according to the most up-to-date research-based guidelines for NSTEMI care as outlined by the American Heart Association.

Recognition as a STEMI Receiving Center is designed to showcase hospitals that provide 24/7 support for STEMI. These important facilities coordinate with a network of referring hospitals and emergency medical services to provide guideline-directed STEMI and NSTEMI care. “Effective and timely care is crucial for patients experiencing a STEMI heart attack. The American Heart Association’s guidelines call for specific interventions for these patients both in-hospital and post-hospitalization,” said Dr. Goyal.

The STEMI Receiving Center award is earned by hospitals that demonstrate a commitment to treating patients according to the most up-to-date research-based guidelines for STEMI care as outlined by the American Heart Association.
