Mather Hospital’s Blue & White Gala: A Night That Lit Up More Than the Sky
On a picture-perfect evening overlooking the Long Island Sound, Mather Hospital’s 2026 Blue & White Gala — presented by the Frey Family Foundation and Dayton T. Brown, Inc. — brought together hundreds of supporters and past honorees, raising nearly $300,000 to advance clinical care and the patient experience for Mather. The 2026 Blue & White Gala was more than just an event — it was a vibrant celebration highlighting the dedication of everyone who continuously elevates the health and wellness of our community. The magic started on the blue carpet, where the vibrant sounds of steel drums set a festive, island-inspired tone as guests arrived smiling, dancing, and posing at an interactive photo station that captured their moments and delivered the images directly to their phones. The ballroom was stunning — blue uplighting, crisp white linens, navy napkins, and gorgeous centerpieces of white roses, hydrangeas, and delphiniums set the scene beneath soaring vaulted ceilings and golden chandeliers. In a meaningful new tradition, past Theodore Roosevelt Award honorees were recognized during the evening — a heartfelt nod to the individuals who have helped shape Mather’s legacy and a reminder that this community never forgets those who give so much.
“The second I walked in, I knew this was going to be a special night,” a gala attendee shared.
Vice President of Foundation and External Affairs Matthew Colson opened the program before Hospital President Kevin McGeachy introduced the 2026 Theodore Roosevelt Award honorees.
The first award honored a distinguished gentleman still leading his company at 91 years old — Dayton T. Brown Jr., who remains the active CEO of Dayton T. Brown, Inc. after more than 75 years with the company. Angela Chewning, SVP of Human Resources, accepted on his behalf, describing him as “remarkably humble, deeply grounded, and fiercely committed to giving back.” In a poignant connection, his father received the very same award in 1972.
Next, the room welcomed a physician who has become synonymous with Mather’s Emergency Department. Kenneth Hirsch, MD, FACEP, arrived in 1996 thinking it “might be a brief stop” — 30 years later, he’s remains proud to still be at Mather. When he recently needed surgery and friends suggested a renowned NYC hospital, his answer drew laughter and admiration: “I work at a special hospital full of some of the most special doctors and nurses around.”
“I’ve known Dr. Hirsch for years and there’s no one more deserving. The man lives and breathes Mather,” remarked a longtime friend and supporter.
The final honor of the evening recognized the woman behind the transformation of Mather’s Behavioral Health Program. With 39 years of dedicated service, Denise Driscoll, RN-BC, CARN, PMHCNS-BC, NPP, built what Mr. McGeachy called “the crown jewel” of the hospital. Her remarks moved the room as she reflected on a path “paved with failures and successes, challenges and triumphs,” closing with a stirring call: “Let us lean into one another with kindness and understanding, because in the end, that is what life is truly all about.”
With the formal program concluded, the One Step Ahead Band packed the dance floor as guests enjoyed dinner, the outdoor lounge, and balcony views of the Long Island Sound. Then came the grand finale — a breathtaking Northwell Health-sponsored drone show that lit up the night sky to gasps, cheers, and applause.
“Standing out there watching those drones over the water — this is what community looks like at its very best,” one guest reflected.
The 2026 Blue & White Gala was far more than a fundraiser — it was a testament to the excellence, compassion, and community spirit that define Mather Hospital. As Mr. Colson reminded the room: “Your philanthropic investment is the fuel that powers Mather’s engine of care.” On this night, that engine roared louder than ever. The JTM Foundation extends heartfelt gratitude to all sponsors, supporters, and every individual whose generosity makes Mather’s mission possible.
