The University Hospital – SUNY at Stony Brook Mather Hospital Transitional Year Program is designed to provide a well-balanced curriculum of graduate medical education in a variety of disciplines, in order to prepare residents for entry into a variety of specialties that require a prerequisite clinical year. The program may also provide clinical education for those medical school graduates who will:
- serve in public health organizations,
- serve on active duty in the military as general medical officers or primary flight/undersea medicine physicians
- desire or need to acquire at least one year of fundamental clinical education before entering administrative medicine or non-clinical research.
The Sponsoring Institution has recently developed and achieved accreditation for an Internal Medicine Program based at Mather Hospital, which started in July 2014. The Transitional Year Program will foster a close relationship with both of its Sponsoring Programs, the Stony Brook Radiology Program and the Internal Medicine Program at Mather.
The one-year Preliminary Internal Medicine Residency Program provides a solid foundation for further training in Internal Medicine specialties. The Mather Preliminary Internal Medicine Program runs alongside the Categorical Internal Medicine Program with residents rotating through the subspecialties of Cardiology, Emergency Medicine, GI, Geriatrics, Hem/Onc, ID, Critical Care, Neurology and Nephrology. Preliminary residents do not have a rotation in ambulatory services or a research/scholarly activity requirement, but are required to attend all the same didactics as the Categorical residents.
The one-year Transitional Year Residency Program provides a solid global training experience with specific electives geared towards an advanced program that may not necessarily be an Internal Medicine specialty, such as Administrative Medicine or Public Health. All Transitional Year residents spend time in General Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Radiology and Critical Care, but the rest of their curriculum differs from the Preliminary Program. Mather Transitional Year residents have eight weeks of “selective” options, where they can choose among Endocrinology, Family Medicine, ID, Neurology or Inpatient Cardiology. They also have four required weeks of Ambulatory Internal Medicine and eight weeks of elective time, where in addition to the Internal Medicine subspecialties, they can rotate through Anesthesiology, Radiology, Sleep Medicine, Medical Informatics or Quality & Leadership.
Some advanced training programs will specify if they want the intern year spent in a Preliminary Program or a Transitional Year Program. Some advanced training programs are open to either. Be sure to check with each program you interview with to see if they have a preference.

The University Hospital - SUNY Stony Brook at Mather Hospital Transitional Year Residency Program aims to be very competitive. However, candidates selected to interview and match will be chosen based on the applicant’s entire file. We are looking for residents committed to high quality and safe patient care across the continuum of healthcare. Therefore, it will be important to have a well-rounded file that includes solid board scores, community involvement, a clearly defined passion for your educational goals and letters of recommendation that capture your clinical and personal strengths.
The University Hospital - SUNY Stony Brook at Mather Hospital Transitional Year Residency Program is located in the Village of Port Jefferson, on the North Shore of Long Island. Situated approximately 60 miles east of New York City, Port Jefferson is within driving distance of vineyards, beaches, restaurants, sporting venues, outlets and more.
We have designed the Mather program to provide not only a satisfying professional experience, but also an overall high quality of your personal life. Residents will not have any overnight in-house call or night float. We take resident well-being seriously and carefully monitor duty hour rules to comply with our policies and to mitigate fatigue and burnout. Our program provides ample opportunity to balance work and play, and Port Jefferson’s locale allows convenient access to everything exciting Long Island and New York City has to offer.
Port Jefferson combines all the quaintness of a seaside historical village with the convenience of a major metropolitan suburb. From vineyards to amusement parks, world famous beaches to spectacular sporting events, outlet shopping to great restaurants, everything one could imagine is just a short drive away.
New York City is no further away than the local train station, which is a 10 minute walk from the hospital. The Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Steamboat Company, offers hourly ferry service to Connecticut, and makes a fun weekend afternoon if you just want to relax and enjoy the sun and water.
Mather Hospital has contracted with multiple rental management companies to reserve a limited number of subsidized, non-furnished studios, one and two bedroom apartments, many within walking distance to the hospital. We will also work with each resident on a case by case basis, as needed, to ensure that they have adequate housing to fulfill their residential needs.
The residency is a State University of New York Stony Brook Medicine sponsored program. As such, most resident benefits are provided by SUNY. These benefits include vacation time, liability coverage, health insurance, dental coverage, conference stipends, sick leave, library access and on-campus activity discounts. They will also have the opportunity to participate in Stony Brook Medicine social activities exclusively for Housestaff, as well as serve as representatives on Stony Brook Medicine Resident councils. Residents will have access to Stony Brook Medicine’s state-of-the-art fitness facilities and may engage in educational activities at their renowned Simulation Center. In addition, Mather provides access to a limited number of subsidized housing units, discounts at local gyms, and 24/7 access to healthy food within the hospital.
We are anticipating that our ACGME initial accreditation will be given at the end of January, 2015, so our inaugural class can commence on July 1, 2015.
