Physical Therapy

The Department of Physical Therapy has provided rehabilitative services for patients at Mather Hospital for more than 30 years. Our experienced staff is dedicated to providing the best possible rehabilitative care.

Our gym is filled with state-of-the-art rehabilitation equipment and we offer a post rehabilitation fitness program to our clients. Specialty Services include:

At Mather Hospital we provide rehabilitation in four hospital service areas: inpatient, outpatient ambulatory, Lymphedema Treatment Center and the Transitional Care Unit.

Mather Physical TherapyInpatient Physical Therapy service is our largest service area. We perform approximately 43,500 procedures and 19,100 visits annually on this service. Our staffs of physical therapists, physical therapist assistants and rehabilitation aides are highly trained and experienced with all types of patients on every unit in the hospital including ICU, CCU and Step Down. We provide skilled physical therapy services seven days a week.

Outpatient Physical Therapy service provides a variety of specialty physical therapy rehabilitation across the lifespan. Our therapists are highly trained in rehabilitative care in the areas of:

  • Orthopedic and Sports Injury
  • Spinal Dysfunction
  • Joint Replacement Rehabilitation
  • Stroke and Neurological Rehabilitation
  • Fall, Balance and Vestibular Rehabilitation and Prevention
  • Hydrotherapy & Wound Care (six wound care certified therapists).
  • General Medical Surgical Rehabilitation
  • Cancer Rehabilitation
  • Fitness and Wellness

Our therapists are not only well trained in all aspects rehabilitation but also well versed in the areas of medicine, illness and disease. Our philosophy is to provide quality one-on-one care and superior customer service. We use valid and reliable outcome measures to help guide the effectiveness of our care.

Over the past three years customer satisfaction has ranked our outpatient service at 98 percent or greater. Our new gym is well equipped with state-of-the-art exercise and rehabilitation equipment. We have convenient parking just a few feet from our gym door. 
 
Lymphedema Treatment Center has been in existence since 2000. We are recognized by the National Lymphedema Network as the largest hospital-based lymphedema center in the Northeast United States. Our eight therapists are trained and certified in lymphedema management. We take an intensive one-on-one approach to lymphedema care providing what is known as Complete Decongestive Therapy. Over the past three years, customer satisfaction scores have ranked the lymphedema service 98 percent or greater. We host the area’s only lymphedema support group and we hold free community education and screening programs for individuals at high risk for lymphedema. In conjunction with Mather Hospital’s Fortunato Breast Center, we run a free early detection program for individuals recovering from breast cancer surgery and treatment. The Lymphedema Treatment Center was honored in 2010 as a Healthcare Hero by LI Business News for its dedication, quality and commitment to the community. 

Transitional Care Unit is a post-acute short stay rehabilitation unit. All patients are transferred to this unit from Mather Hospital’s inpatient service. We provide intensive rehabilitation and nursing care to patients recovering from acute illness, joint replacement surgery, stroke, amputations, etc. All rehabilitation is provided on a one-on-one manner with the goal to prepare the patient for a safe and functional discharge to home. Our performance far surpasses a national comparative data base using the Functional Independence Measure. This measure is the gold standard rehabilitation tool used by rehabilitation units across the nation.
