Breast Cancer Victory Day
September 26, 2009

On Saturday, September 26, renowned oncologist Julia A. Smith, MD, PhD, and three-time breast cancer survivor Judith Larkin of Lake Ronkonkoma will be guest speakers at the 32th Annual Breast Cancer Victory Day at Mather Hospital.

Victory Day celebrates the triumph of those who already have beaten breast cancer, and offers their example as inspiration to those whose fight continues or is just beginning. More than 800 breast cancer survivors, family members and friends are expected to take part in the celebration.

Dr. Smith, director at New York University Cancer Institute, Breast Cancer Screening And Prevention Program, is an expert in breast cancer risk assessment, and is intuitively gifted in coaching patients on dealing with the challenges of their illness and making the most of life.

Larkin, will share her story of how she coped with the physical and emotional challenges of her illness and how she managed to keep a positive outlook during her most difficult times.

Perennial Victory Day supporter, Long Island Rail Road, will provide free round-trip transportation from Penn Station to Port Jefferson on the “Breast Cancer Victory Train.” Suffolk Bus Corp. is providing free transportation from the rail road station to Mather Hospital, where complimentary lunch is served to all attendees.

Sponsored by the Mather-St. Charles Health Alliance, Astoria Federal Savings and Marsha & Henry Laufer, Victory Day is the largest non-fundraising breast cancer awareness gathering on Long Island. Victory Day will take place from 12 noon until 2:30 p.m.

Registration information will be available later this summer.
