Mather Hospital Volunteer: Laura Jean Glover: 14,000 Hours of Service and Counting
March 25, 2009

Three mornings a week, often before sunrise, Laura Jean Glover leaves her beloved home at Jefferson’s Ferry and drives to Mather Hospital to begin her six-hour shift—as a volunteer.
Glover is one of a legion of auxilians that provides a highly valued service to Mather Hospital and the overall community. For 21 years, she has donated her time at Mather Hospital. Her cumulative volunteer hours at Mather have now topped 14,000.
“I was a nurse before I moved to Port Jefferson and when I got here, I knew where I wanted to volunteer,” says Glover. One of her responsibilities is to serve as a patient representative. Through that role, she visits with newly admitted patients to see that they are settling in well and that they receive any assistance they may require. It’s a job she really enjoys.
“I go around and visit them, welcome them, and ask how their experience has been,” says Glover. “And I hear constant, constant praise about our hospital.”
