Mather Physicians Rally State Lawmakers to Protect Patients
March 6, 2009
More than 100 physicians and healthcare providers from the Port Jefferson area joined more than 1,000 of their colleagues from around the state to rally New York legislators to stabilize malpractice insurance costs, and address state budget concerns which could drastically impact quality and affordable health care on Long Island and across New York State.
Gathering on the State Capitol stairs following their meeting with Governor Paterson at the annual Legislative Conference, which was held at the Kitty Carlisle Hart Auditorium (in the famous “Egg” building), Mather physicians shared their concerns that hikes in medical liability premiums would force good doctors to leave New York and leave communities in critical need of quality care.
“Advocacy Day initiated a full force, grassroots effort to bring true and meaningful healthcare reform to New York State,” said Maria Basile, MD, of Mather’s medical staff. “Doctors returned from Albany re-energized, redirected, and fully committed to spread awareness of the need for medical liability and managed care reform among their colleagues, their staff and hospitals, and their patients.”
