Support Groups

ADULT-INFANT-CHILD CPR/BLS: Mather is a designated training center for American Heart Association courses in Adult-Infant and Child CPR and BLS, for both health care providers and the community. Call 476-2729 for schedule and fees.

AL ANON: A support group for families and friends of those who have drinking problems. Meets 6:30 pm every Saturday, conference rooms 1 & 2. Registration not required.

ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS: A support group for men and women with drinking problems. There are separate groups. Registration not required. For information, contact Public Affairs office at 476-2723.

ASTHMA EDUCATION WORKSHOP: Pediatric & Adult Workshops available. Registration required, contact Ted Nilsson, Respiratory Therapy, hospital ext. 4088.
Pediatrics: Meets second Tuesday of every month, 7:30 - 9:00 pm, conference room 2.
Adults: Meets fourth Tuesday of every month, 7:30 - 9:00 pm, conference room 2.

BLOOD PRESSURE SCREENING: Available Monday thru Friday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, Triage desk of the Emergency Pavilion.

CANCER SURVIVOR GROUP: Support group for men and women who have or had any type of cancer. Families welcome. Meets third Thursday of every month, 6:00 – 8:00 pm, conference rooms 4 & 5. Registration not required. For information, contact Stacey Jolley 631-689-1635.

CHRONIC FATIGUE, FIBROMYALGIA, LIME & OTHER CHRONIC DISEASES SUPPORT GROUP: Support group for those with many types of chronic diseases, focusing on psychological aspects of chronic disease, coping skills, meditation and journaling. Patients only. Registration not required. Effective 2/6/10, meets every Saturday, 4:00 – 5:30 pm, conference rooms 4 & 5. Voluntary donation fee per class. CROHN’S AND COLITIS SUPPORT GROUP: A support group for patients with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, and their families. Two groups meet monthly: Parent’s group meets first Tuesday every month; Women’s group meets last Tuesday every month. Registratio required. EATING DISORDERS SUPPORT GROUP:
A support group for people with eating disorders. Parents, friends and spouses are welcome. Meets first Monday of every month, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm, conference room 3. Registration not required. Contact Sue Morin, 473-3877 ext. 27 for information.

EMOTIONS ANONYMOUS: A 12-step program for people with emotional problems. Meets every Sunday, 3:00 – 5:00 pm, conference rooms 1 & 2. Registration not required. For more information, contact Janet Brokow 631-584-5604.

FAMILIES ANONYMOUS:A support group for families dealing with problems relating to drugs, alcohol, behavioral problems, and inter-personal relationships. Meets every Friday, 8:00 - 9:30 pm, conference rooms 1 & 2. Registration not required. For information, contact Marian at 631-736-5856.

GREEN SEMINARS (Smoking & Weight Loss): Pre-registration required - $75 fee, group hypnosis. Call 1-800-342-1303 to register. Meets second Thursday of every month, 7:00 - 9:00 pm, conference rooms 1 & 2.

LIVE, LOVE & LAUGH AGAIN: A support group for women who have breast cancer. Family members are encouraged to attend (students permitted). Meets fourth Tuesday of every month, 7:00 - 9:00 pm, O.R. LOOK GOOD - FEEL BETTER: A complimentary makeover session for cancer patients undergoing radiation or chemotherapy. Scheduled two hour sessions 6:00 – 8:00 pm, conf. room 1. Appointment required. Meets third Monday of every other month: 2/22 (date changed due to holiday on 2/15), 4/19, 6/21, 8/16, 10/18, 12/20. Call Public Affairs at 476-2723 to make an appointment.

LYMPHEDEMA SUPPORT GROUP: A support group for individuals that have been diagnosed with lymphedema or at high risk for lymphedema. The goals of the support group are to learn and share information about lymphedema and its management. Family members and care givers are welcome. NAMI - NATIONAL ALLIANCE FOR THE MENTALLY ILL:
A support group for the patient, family & friends. Meets second Wed. of every month (patients only this class) 6:30-8:30 pm, conf. room 1; third Wed. of every month 7:30-9:30 conf. room 1; fourth Wed. of every month 7:00 – 8:00 pm, conf. room 1. NAMI – NATIONAL ALLIANCE FOR THE MENTALLY ILL - INFORMATIONAL PRESENTATIONS ONLY: Meets the first Wednesday of every month, 7:30-9:00 pm, conf. room 1.

“NEWLY” DIAGNOSED WOMEN WITH BREAST CANCER: Meets Thursday evenings, 8 week sessions, dates vary. Meeting time 5:30 - 7:00 pm, O.R. Conference room. Registration necessary. For dates and information, contact Sonny Levinbook, CSW, at 631-689-1854.

OVEREATERS ANONYMOUS: A support group for people with overeating problems. Registration not required. Two separate groups meet: 7:00-9:00 pm every Sunday conference room 2; 7:30-9:30 pm every Monday conference room 2.

P.O.M.C. (Parents of Murdered Children): POMC is a National Organization that is a support network dedicated to help survivors of homicide victims (child, spouse, sibling, relative, friend). Registration not required. Meets second Sunday of every month (begins 3/14) 2:00-4:00 pm conf. rooms 4&5. For more information, contact June at 631-384-5240.

PROSTATE CANCER SCREENING: The Men’s Prostate Health Center at Mather Hospital offers free prostate cancer screening exams. Screenings held on the third Tuesday in March, June, Sept., Dec. from 4:00-6:00 pm. Appointment necessary. Call 474-6030 to schedule an appointment.

PROSTATE CANCER SUPPORT GROUP “Us-Too”: A support group for men who have or had prostate cancer. Family members, friends and spouses are encouraged to attend. Meets first Tuesday of every month, 7:30-9:30 pm, O.R. conference room. Registration required. Contact Craig Schmidt at 631-846-4377.

REACH TO RECOVERY :A special program to help patients with breast cancer cope with their diagnosis, treatment and recovery. The program pairs a breast cancer survivor with a recently diagnosed patient who has similar issues. Each American Cancer Society volunteer is specially trained to help the patient express their feelings and verbalize their fears and concerns. Contact may be either a personal visit, on-line or a phone call, based on location. For more information, call the American Cancer Society 24-hour phone line at 800-227-2345.

SLEEP DISORDERS SUPPORT GROUP: Various sleep disorders presented and discussed. Class dates vary, registration required. For information and registration, contact the Sleep Disorders Center at 631-476-2721.
