Arif Ahmad, MD, Director of the Bariatric Center of Excellence
Dr. Arif Ahmad is a board-certified surgeon with fellowship training in advanced laparoscopic surgery, including bariatric surgery. He specializes in minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery which is performed through small incisions and causing minimal pain, less scarring and shorter recovery times.
Dr. Ahmad specializes in both laparoscopic gastric bypass and the gastric banding procedure, with more than 30 years of surgical experience. He also performs sleeve gastrectomy, a restrictive form of bariatric surgery that shrinks the stomach to approximately 15 percent of its original size. He has been recognized as one of America’s Top Surgeons by Consumer Research Council of America. His private practice is Long Island Laparoscopic Surgery in Port Jefferson, NY.
After completing his medical degree and residency training, Dr. Ahmad trained in the United Kingdom to obtain the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS), a professional qualification to practice surgery in the U.K. and Ireland. He also completed an 18-month advanced training fellowship at Harvard Medical School, followed by an additional five-year residency at the University of Connecticut. He spent a year mastering advanced training in laparoscopic surgery through a fellowship at the University of Virginia.
Upon completing his extensive medical training, Dr. Ahmad was appointed Director of Laparoscopic Surgery at Stony Brook University in 2001, where he taught other doctors to perform laparoscopic procedures, including laparoscopic bariatric surgery. Dr. Ahmad also founded the Department of Bariatric Surgery at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital and St. Charles Hospital.
Dr. Ahmad is a member of the American Society of Bariatric Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Society of American Gastroendoscopic Surgeons. Dr. Ahmad was named one of America's Top Surgeons by Consumer Research Council and was named a Top Doctor by Long Island Pulse Magazine. He was also featured in MD News.
Seema Ahmad, MA
Seema Ahmad coordinates the Bariatric program with Dr. Ahmad's practice. She helps patients set short- and long-term goals, teaches them to recognize eating and exercise habits, and helps them make the behavioral modifications that prepare them for future physiological and psychological changes. Seema also runs the program's Support Group, which meets twice monthly. She attends ASMBS (American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery) courses focused on behavioral health.
AnnaMarie Braslow, RN, BS, CCRN, EMBA
As Bariatric Program Coordinator, AnnaMarie has an extraordinary capacity for empathy, and has provided compassionate care to bariatric patients during her years of nursing at Mather. In fact, AnnaMarie herself is a patient of Dr. Ahmad, having successfully undergone gastric bypass surgery in 2007.
Linda Folken, MS, RD, CDN, CNSD
Linda Folken is a Registered Dietitian certified in Nutrition Support and Adult Weight Management. Linda has been in practice for more than 25 years, specializing in Critical Care and Bariatrics. In addition, she is an Adjunct Professor at Suffolk County Community College.
